Development of a Numerical Model to Simulate Laser-Shock Paint Stripping on Aluminum Substrates

An explicit 3D Finite Element (FE) model was developed in the LS-Dyna code to simulate laser shock paint stripping on aircraft aluminum substrates. The main objective of is explain physical mechanisms process terms wave propagation, stress and strain evolution shape size evaluate effects material parameters pattern. To behavior aluminum, Johnson–Cook plasticity Gruneisen equation state were applied. stripping, cohesive zone modeling method FE compared successfully against experiments back-face velocity profiles. considered study are thickness, epoxy spot diameter, fracture toughness aluminum/epoxy interface maximum applied pressure. In all cases, a circular solid or hollow pattern predicted, which agrees with experimental findings. All found affect numerical results could be used for design selective tests.
